With many needles to choose from, the manufacturer recognizes the need to identify each sewing needle quickly and accurately by both type and size. To facilitate identifying both features, the Schmetz sewing needles display two color-coded bands. The color of the lower band always identifies the needle size. The color of the upper band identifies the needle type. To ease the identification task, the Collector Tin includes the clearly organized Schmetz Color Chart.

But not every needle has the upper color band (Schmetz makes too many needle types for that). Other needle types can be identified quickly by tip and eye. The Collector Tin includes another useful chart–What Needle Am I?–to identify a sewing needle’s type by the appearance of its tip and eye.
